When two powers share the same base, you don't have to work them out the long way — there's a shortcut that works on the exponents alone.
Multiplying ADDS the exponents: 2^3 × 2^5 means (2×2×2) × (2×2×2×2×2) — eight 2s in a row — so it's 2^8, and 3 + 5 = 8. Dividing does the opposite and SUBTRACTS: 2^7 ÷ 2^2 = 2^5, because 7 − 2 = 5. The base never changes; only the exponent does.
Add (for ×) or subtract (for ÷) the exponents, and type the new one.
